A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, or CFP®, is a financial professional who provides a range of financial planning services. However, rather than just a financial planner, someone who holds the CFP® designation is someone who has satisfied education and experience requirements. To be sure, in order to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, a person must satisfy:

  • Two-part education requirement. To earn the CFP® designation, an applicant must satisfy the two-part education requirement. First, they must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university; second, they must complete coursework on financial planning through a CFP® Board Registered Program.
  • Exam requirement. Once the education requirement has been satisfied, the applicant must also pass the CFP® exam. This exam features 170 questions that are administered in two three-hour sessions.
  • Experience requirements. Once a person passes the CFP® exam and has satisfied the education requirement, they still cannot practice as a registered CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ until they have also satisfied the experience requirements. The CFP® designation requires 6,000 hours of professional experience related to the financial planning process, or 4,000 hours of apprenticeship experience that meets additional requirements.
  • Ethics requirements. The ethics requirement is the final step for someone seeking to become a CFP®. The ethics requirement requires that the individual always act as a fiduciary for a client and adheres to high ethical and professional standards.
